Beta Preview: World of Warships

Slowly but surely, Desura is taking over new virtual battlegrounds. Starting with the dismantling of hulking tanks on the ground, she switched to fast-moving aircraft in the clouds, and now it was the turn of the majestic battleships and nimble destroyers to take the stage.

World of Warships is currently in active development, but this does not prevent the creators from organizing periodic closed testing. Today we will tell you about the results of one of such events.

In principle, veterans of tank battles and air battles should have a fairly clear idea of what is happening in World of Warships : two armada of ships converge in an equal battle to find out which of them is cooler. This can be done in one of two modes: classic, when the battle goes on until either all enemy ships are sunk, or the enemy base is captured; or in the mode of capturing points, where the victory is ensured by keeping the zones scattered around the map.

All this happens, which is logical, in the scenery of various archipelagos. That is, the map is mostly covered with water, but there are also islands of various sizes and shapes on it. Depending on the climatic zones, something may grow there or it may just be blocks of ice, for example.

However, the main thing in World of Warships is, of course, ships. And there are enough of them here at the moment to completely fill the three branches of "pumping" in two factions - the USA and Japan. Moreover, if both sides of the conflict have two classes of ships (destroyers and cruisers), then only Japan has battleships, and only the Americans have aircraft carriers.

The destroyer is a lightly armored ship, predominantly armed with torpedoes, fast and maneuverable. The guns on it are weak, so there is practically no point in hitting even their classmates with them, but everyone should be afraid of torpedoes. The main problem for the destroyer is direct contact with the enemy. For a volley from the main guns, for example, a battleship, he will not survive. On the other hand, you still have to get on the small and nimble boat.

The battleship is a huge battle giant, bristling with cannons of large and small caliber, capable of sending shells over ten kilometers. A real thunderstorm of the seas, however, due to the thickness of the armor and the weight of the cannons, it is extremely sluggish, clumsy and therefore vulnerable to dashing torpedo attacks from destroyers.

Cruiser - the golden mean between battleship and destroyer; a sufficiently heavily armed and armored warship to be able to oppose something to the battleship in a direct collision (at least for a while), but at the same time it can dodge a torpedo.

The aircraft carrier is the largest and most clumsy class, which, in principle, is not difficult to guess. It is practically incapable of independently conducting battle, but it can launch squadrons of aircraft of various tactical orientations - reconnaissance aircraft, fighters, dive bombers. The game for this class is very different from all the others, because mainly you have to control not the ship, but the planes, and you do it from the top view, and not from the side of the ship.

Controlled and played is all predictably easy and pleasant, after the first fight you get used to the fact that the team is "full speed ahead!" - this is not the pressed W button, but it is the same, but pressed several times. It's the same story with the twists and turns. On the other hand, it is worth understanding that the controls are quite arcade, which sometimes allows you to get up not very realistic turns on the water surface.

The only thing that saddens a little is that all ships, regardless of their size, after depletion of the strip of "lives" sink almost instantly, not remaining in the form of skeletons, not giving the player a chance to make at least a couple of shots from non-main guns.

After each battle, for our merits, we receive a certain amount of resources, which are spent on maintaining the player's existing battle vessels in working order, as well as on improving them or studying and buying new ones.

In general, World of Warships looks like a logical continuation of the Desura series of games, quite original and different from previous projects so that the developers cannot be accused of “just redrawing the tanks”, but recognizable and understandable at the same time. Therefore, the recommendation is simple: if you like the basics of the gameplay in World of Tanks , then you should take a closer look at WoWs; if not, then you can get acquainted only out of ardent love for the marine theme. For games about ships and sea battles lately are less and less.
